KJV

And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Church Fathers

Irenaeus (Against Heresies V.32) takes the binding literally — Satan is bound during the millennial reign following Christ's return. Tertullian (Against Marcion III.24) agrees. Augustine (City of God XX.7) is the pivotal voice for amillennialism: the binding is present-tense throughout the Church age, and Satan is bound 'from deceiving the nations' in the sense that the gospel now reaches them. This reading comes to dominate the Latin West from the 5th century onward.
