Church Fathers

Irenaeus (Against Heresies V.28-30) is the first to propose the 'Lateinos' interpretation of 666, while noting that the apostle John knew the name. He explicitly warns against over-confident identification. Hippolytus (On the Antichrist 50) offers 'Teitan' as another possibility. Victorinus of Pettau (Commentary on the Apocalypse) also lists 'Antemos' and 'Diclux.' Augustine (City of God XX.9) refuses speculation and treats the mark as indicating those who oppose God, whether physically or spiritually.
