Daniel's 70 Weeks: Timeline to Messiah and the Final Week
Daniel 9:24-27 outlines 70 "weeks" (490 years) determined for Israel: 7 weeks + 62 weeks from the decree to restore Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, then Messiah is "cut off" (killed). After the 62 weeks, the people of "the prince that shall come" destroy the city and sanctuary (70 AD). The final 70th week: a covenant confirmed for 7 years, broken at the midpoint with the "abomination of desolation" — cessation of sacrifice and a desolating sacrilege.
Fulfillment Notes
Weeks 1-69 fulfilled: Artaxerxes' decree (445 BC, Nehemiah 2:1-8) + 483 years = ~32 AD, the crucifixion of Jesus. The people of the coming prince (Romans under Titus) destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 AD. The 70th week (final 7 years) is unfulfilled — this is the Tribulation period in most eschatological frameworks. The midpoint "abomination of desolation" is referenced by Jesus in Matthew 24:15 and by Paul in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4.
