The Burden of Tyre: Fall of the Global Trading Empire
Isaiah 23 and Ezekiel 26-28 describe Tyre — "the crowning city, whose merchants are princes" (Isa 23:8). Tyre's destruction is ordained "to stain the pride of all glory" (23:9). After 70 years of desolation, Tyre returns to commerce but ultimately her wealth becomes "holiness to the LORD" (23:18). Ezekiel 28 describes Tyre's ruler in language that transcends any human king: "thou wast in Eden," "the anointed cherub" — dual reference to both the king of Tyre and the spiritual power behind him (Satan).
Fulfillment Notes
Tyre was besieged by Nebuchadnezzar (585-573 BC), destroyed by Alexander the Great (332 BC — scraped the mainland city into the sea to build a causeway to the island, literally fulfilling Ezekiel 26:12). Modern Sur, Lebanon occupies the site but is not the global trading power it was. The eschatological dimension links to Revelation 18 (fall of commercial Babylon). Ezekiel 28's description of the "anointed cherub" is one of the key passages about Satan's origin.
