Church Fathers

Irenaeus (Against Heresies V.32-36) reads the new creation as a renewed physical cosmos following the millennium; the righteous inhabit Jerusalem renewed. Tertullian (Against Marcion III.24) affirms a literal earthly New Jerusalem during the millennium and a final renewal after. Augustine (City of God XX.16-17, XXII) reads the descent of New Jerusalem as the glorified Church entering eternal rest with God, yet affirms real bodily resurrection and a genuinely new creation. Jerome (Commentary on Isaiah 65) reads the 'new heavens and new earth' language literally, following the rabbinic tradition he inherited.
